In situ fast ellipsometric analysis of repetitive surface phenomena

چکیده
We present an ellipsometric technique and ellipsometric analysis of repetitive phenomena, based on the experimental arrangement of conventional phase modulated ellipsometers ~PME! conceived to study fast surface phenomena in repetitive processes such as periodic and triggered experiments. Phase modulated ellipsometry is a highly sensitive surface characterization technique that is widely used in the real-time study of several processes such as thin film deposition and etching. However, fast transient phenomena cannot be analyzed with this technique because precision requirements limit the data acquisition rate to about 25 Hz. The presented new ellipsometric method allows the study of fast transient phenomena in repetitive processes with a time resolution that is mainly limited by the data acquisition system. As an example, we apply this new method to the study of surface changes during plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition of amorphous silicon in a modulated radio frequency discharge of SiH4. This study has revealed the evolution of the optical parameters of the film on the millisecond scale during the plasma on and off periods. The presented ellipsometric method extends the capabilities of PME arrangements and permits the analysis of fast surface phenomena that conventional PME cannot achieve. © 1997 American Institute of Physics. @S0034-6748~97!00508-X#

In situ, real time monitoring of surface transformation: ellipsometric microscopy imaging of electrografting at microstructured gold surfaces.
Surface chemical reactivity is imaged by combining electrochemical activation of a surface transformation process with spatiotemporal ellipsometric microscopy. An imaging ellipsometric microscope is built, allowing ellipsometric images of surfaces with a lateral resolution of ∼1 μm and a thickness sensitivity of ∼0.1 nm in air and 0.4 nm in a liquid. These performances are particularly adapted ...
متن کاملIn Situ Ellipsometric Monitoring of Gold Nanorod Metamaterials Growth
An in situ transmission-based system has been designed to optically monitor the ellipsometry constants of a hyperbolic plasmonic metamaterial during electrochemical growth. The metamaterial, made from an array of vertically aligned gold nanorods, has demonstrated an unprecedented ability to manipulate the polarization of light using subwavelength thickness slabs, making in situ ellipsometric da...
متن کاملFast and Sensitive Ellipsometry-Based Biosensing
In this work, a biosensing method based on in situ, fast, and sensitive measurements of ellipsometric parameters (Ψ, ∆) is proposed. Bare silicon wafer substrate is functionalized and used to bind biomolecules in the solution. Coupled with a 45° dual-drive symmetric photoelastic modulator-based ellipsometry, the parameters Ψ and ∆ of biolayer arising due to biomolecular interactions are determi...
متن کاملFast-ion transport during repetitive burst phenomena of Toroidal Alfvén Eigenmodes in the Large Helical Device
Alfvén instabilities induced fast-ion losses have been directly observed for the first time by a newly developed scintillator lost ion probe (SLIP) in the Large Helical Device (LHD). The SLIP can measure the pitch angle and gyro radius of escaped fast ions toward loss region. Neutral beam driven Alfvén Eigenmodes (AEs) are excited under the reactor relevant conditions: the ratio of fast ion (be...

Conventionally, alloying elements are being added to the whole melt; however, in this research in-situ surface alloying of gray cast iron was employed to improve surface properties of the castings. Wires of pure copper with diameters of 0.4 and 0.8 mm were inserted and fixed at bottom of sand molds before melting. Chemical composition analysis revealed the presence of copper from surface to a...
